(Julie, a woman in her mid-forties, with Hispanic blood and a Northern Minnesota accent, leads Alex and Jamie into their new apartment.)
Julie- And here we go!
Alex- Oh wow.
Jamie- Nice space.
Alex- This is huge. I wasn’t expecting this at all.
Julie- Yeah, it’s a nice one here. We have some really nice apartments here and this is a pretty nice one.
Alex- Man, check this out. Couches, tables, ah man, check out the kitchen.
Jamie- How many bathrooms does it have?
Julie- Ah, just one. Yeah.
Jamie- Ugghh…
Alex- We’ll be fine. That’ll be fine.
Jamie- Yeah, sharing a bathroom with two girls and one other guy. Fine.
Julie- Yeah, that’s one of the bigger complaints we have about the program, but ya know we can only accommodate—
Alex- Right, yeah, no, it’s fine.
Julie- —just enough space for so many people—
Alex- Yeah yeah yeah, sure.
Julie- —and most places like this one here only have one bathroom, sometimes two if you’re really lucky, but yeah, hey, you’re all young and willing to work it out.
Alex- Yeah, it will be fine.
(Pause)
Jamie- How many bedrooms.
Julie- Ah, yeah, three, yeah, two doubles and a single, over there.
Jamie- Alright, cool. So we can room together, the girls can have the other double and the other guy can have the single.
Alex- Sounds good.
Jamie- That’ll work.
Julie- Yeah, you guys have got a really nice space. Look out the window you can see the Willis Tower and the skyline and everything…
Alex- (looks out the window) Oh wow, yeah you can!
Julie- …and there’s a nice little garden out in the back and the neighbors are pretty nice, yeah, Logan Square is just a really nice neighborhood, you ever been down here before?
Alex- Uh, sort of.
Jamie- We saw The Dead Weather at the Congress Theater.
Julie- Okay yeah, yeah, the Congress, good part of the neighborhood, couple of years back Wicker Park was the big center for the Arts and Music Scene, but now it’s migrated here to Logan Square, it’s really thriving…
Alex- ‘Kay, Cool, yeah, I can’t wait to explore.
Julie- …and ya know, who knows where it’ll migrate to from here, maybe Bucktown, or Hyde Park, or even Chinatown—but they already got their own thing goin’, their own culture—
Jamie- What time should we meet you tomorrow? To start moving furniture into the apartments?
Julie- Oh tomorrow, right right, yeah. Okay, well here’s what we’ll do, Yeah, Okay. My husband—Carl—and my son—Marcus—will pick you guys up here with a U-Haul at 8:30 in the morning and there’s a bunk bed in the single room that needs to be taken apart and put in the basement cuz we’re gonna take that over to a different apartment sometime later, maybe tomorrow or Thursday—yeah, Thursday, likely—and we’ll be here at 8:30 and we’ll pick you up and then we’ll go over to Logan Blvd, and start unloading and loading and movin’ all sorts of stuff back forth.
(Pause)
Julie- Alright?
Alex- Yeah, that sounds great.
Jamie- Okay.
Julie- Okay, well you two can get unpacked and start setting up and there’s a food store down the street, couple of blocks past—can’t think of the name—but it’s a nice big one and yeah, I’ll see you guys tomorrow.
(Julie waves good-bye and leaves.)
(Alex and Jamie look at each other.)
(Julie comes back into the room.)
Julie- Welcome to Chicago!
