On The Train, Going There

*

Jamie- —think they give food on this train?

Alex- You mean, like, the way they do on airplanes?

Jamie- Yeah.

Alex- Peanuts and a Beverage?

Jamie- Yes, that’s what I’m talking about.

Alex- A little cart rolling down the aisle.

Jamie- Christ…

Alex- It’s a two-and-a-half hour trip.

Jamie- I’ve been on a plane for less than an hour and the waitresses—

Alex- —stewards.

Jamie- —bring you a pop and your choice of peanuts, cookies or crackers. They can’t do that here…

Alex- People are always calmed by those things when they get on a plane. They’re comfort foods, emphasis on the ‘comfort’. People don’t necessarily like to fly, they get antsy, so what do they do? They make their way to the bathroom every five minutes. What they do to keep sat down and stop fearing their plane is going to careen into a lake? Give ‘em some candy. Take the same scenario with a train, doesn’t work. No one’s worried their train is going to collide into another train or careen into a lake. No one. I’m not. Are you?

Jamie- I’m just hungry.

Alex- No fears, no food. That’s the way it goes.

Jamie- Uh- huh.

(Silence. The whistle blows. The train halts. A sign says Plano.)

Jamie- Hey, look.

Alex- Hmm?

Jamie- Outside. The cars. The destruction. The smoke. The fire. The signs on the buildings.

Alex- What about ‘em?

Jamie- They’re all demolished! The cars are halfway in the ground! There’s smoke and fire coming out of that destructed building! The signs say ‘Welcome to Smallville’.

Alex- Huh…

Conductor- (over the intercom) Ladies and gentlemen, this stop is Plano. Plaaaaaanno. If look out your window on the North side, you will see the film set for the new Superman movie. That’s the new Superman movie, being filmed here in Plano. Plaaaaaanno. (Pause) We’ll be arriving at our destination within the hour.

Jamie- New Superman Movie.

Alex- Cool.

(Silence)

Jamie- I’m still hungry.

Alex- I have some homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Jamie- YES!
